Oral Health Snapshot (2022)

The Oral Health Snapshot is a PDF resource that builds on the analyses in CSAAH’s 2021 Health Atlas tool. The Health Atlas presents data from local, several regional, and national datasets (2012-2018) to visually document health disparities in risk factors, disease prevalence, and key health topics across the geographic spectrum, disaggregated by Asian American (AA), Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (NH/PI) subgroups. The areas where there are data gaps is useful to starkly show where additional disaggregated research and data is needed.

CSAAH ran additional analyses across local and national datasets to look at AA and NH/PI oral health disparities in regional communities. Community notes and feedback gathered from our National Advisory Committee on Research (NAC) provide regional, community-specific context to better interpret the data presented in this tool.

Click the graphic below to view the Oral Health Snapshot tool and examine a visual comparison of preventative oral health care across AA and NH/PI ethnicities among selected geographical areas in the United States. Findings reveal hidden disparities that exist for AAs and NH/PIs when data is disaggregated.

HOW TO USE THE TOOL

  • For each dataset, you will see a grey callout box providing a brief description of the given local or national survey.
  • Prevalence of preventive oral health care (i.e. dental screening in the past year) is represented by shaded bars.
  • To the right of the shaded bars is the 95% confidence interval, or the range of values that we are 95% certain contains the true mean prevalence of the given population.
  • Following each big chart is a series of three small graphs presenting demographic information (i.e. education level, insurance status) of the respective AA and/or NH/PI groups surveyed within each dataset.
  • A detailed explanation of each dataset and further technical notes can be found at the end of the PDF resource!
