The Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) Study
South Asians (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepali, and Sri Lankan) have high rates of heart attacks and stroke that is not explained by widely known risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes or smoking. The Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) Study is the first longitudinal study in U.S. South Asians that aims to understand what factors lead to heart disease and guide prevention and treatment of heart disease. Identification of these factors may help guide future treatments to prevent or cure heart disease in South Asians. The MASALA study is a multi-site study being co-led by teams from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Northwestern University, and New York University.
