Race/Ethnicity Data Disaggregation Toolkits (2023)
In 2023, the Center for the Study of Asian American Health (CSAAH) at NYU Langone Health and the Coalition of Asian American Children and Families (CACF) partnered to develop a Race/Ethnicity Data Disaggregation Toolkits. As a complement to our Manual on Collection, Analysis, and Reporting Of Asian American Health Data (2023), our Toolkit resources help to communicate the importance of, and best practices for disaggregating race/ethnicity data, in different work or community settings. Each Toolkit contains:
- A Data Equity Guide. The PDF Guide resource offers background information, approaches to respond to frequently asked questions and anticipated challenges, and best practices for enabling data disaggregation, tailored for specific communities of interest.
- A PowerPoint deck. We prepared short, customizable summary slide decks for different audiences. Slide decks may be tailored and shared to team members or relevant partners. Powerpoint slides may be used in conjunction with sharing out the FAQ sheets to stakeholders, to provide training and continuing education to staff, or shared to patients to address data-related concerns, or be used to advocate for disaggregation methods and data governance actions.
- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) handouts. We developed FAQ handouts for seven aggregate racial/ethnic groups (American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black, Hispanic/Latino, Middle Eastern/North African, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and White). Each FAQ sheet offers helpful information to explore the value and steps to disaggregating race/ethnicity data for the respective aggregate racial/ethnic groups, such as providing definitions of terms, recognizing privacy concerns, suggesting possible research outcomes, and offering sample responses to disaggregated questions.
These resources are intended to focus on increasing accessibility to real-world applications of data disaggregation practices. Use these guides and the included talking point materials to make easier your work and efforts to promote accurate and inclusive data collection, analysis, and reporting practices.
We have created Toolkits for the following (broad) groupings of collaborators who may be able to encourage data disaggregation through their work: see which one may apply to your own team or in your own work!
- Health systems executives and providers
- Community-based organization leaders and advocates
- Data managers, system administrators, and analysts
